Collection Preview: Summer Skies with Liza Pruitt

Have you ever experienced summer in Texas? If you’re a Texan, you know what I’m talking about. If you’re not, then let me sum it up with one word: HOT. The 100-plus degree weather influences every aspect of a Texan’s day. We get outside in the morning, while the temperature is still in the “cool” 90’s, and we find any way to cool down. From ice cold beverages, to dips in the pool, you won’t find an indoor establishment with their AC set any higher than 70. Nothing beats the relief of cold air that hits you when you cross the threshold to the indoors.

The drama of a Texas summer shows itself most beautifully in its sunrises and sunsets. The warmth of the air shows up in the colors of a fiery hot sunset show. Hot pinks, deep purples and neon orange dance across the sky as the sun retreats each day. In a matter of seconds you see a spectrum of color shift and change as the sun quickly falls, and before you know it, nighttime makes its arrival. The light reflects onto the trees and land below it, tinting everything with a warm glow.

In this collection of paintings, I want to capture the drama of summer skies. From long-cast stadows to rosy pink skies, I show the warmth and spectacle of a summer sunset. The wide Texas sky puts on a show each evening as another day ends, and the stark lines, high contrast, and bright colors of these paintings are my attempt to freeze these fleeting moments in time. Deep shadows contrast with the last light cast by the falling sun, and signal that night has nearly come. These bright lights reflect onto the land below it, painting the entire landscape with its colors.

The sun is setting on a season of my life with a newborn on the way, and will dramatically change upon his or her arrival. For me, the paintings of this collection remind me that, like sunsets, even though one day is over, a new day is coming, and it, too, will be beautiful.

This collection includes eleven framed paintings ranging in sizes from 6x6” to 18x24” created with oil paint on canvas.

Each of the inspiration photos was taken at and around my family’s Farm in south Texas during one evening’s dramatic Summer sunset. I drew from a collection of photos taken from different vantage points around the property, from tight vignettes to sweeping views. The color palette is vibrant, colorful and dramatic to personify the drama of a warm Texas sunset.

I am so thrilled to bring this collection to you exclusively through Liza Pruitt! Earlier this year I launched a collection of landscapes with Liza that sold out within days, and I am so honored that she has asked me back for more! These pieces will be available on her website NEXT WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26 at 9AM EST/8AM CST. Keep a close eye on your inbox for a link to the full collection!
