Liza Pruitt Collection Preview: Winter Landscapes

There is nothing like the true rest that comes in the days between Christmas and New Year’s. This year, I rested like it was my job. I spent this down time at The Farm, one of the few places in the world where I can truly, fully slow down. Surrounded by wide open spaces, breathing in fresh air, and spending hours simply keeping warm by a fire pit, my whole self can come to a slow stop for just a few days.

The Farm is the place that constantly inspires me to paint. I want to capture this place in every season, whether it is teeming with wildflowers, or if the landscape is dormant, and less vibrant. As I rest, my search for beauty in the landscape continues. The land itself is resting, and that speaks volumes. The land is not dead, but only experiencing a season of quiet, in preparation for the bounty that comes with Spring. There is a sublime beauty in the flatness of wide fields, whose colors have desaturated in the down season. There are no pockets of wildflowers, no tall grasses swaying in the wind, but short grasses laying low in anticipation for Spring.

With this collection of paintings, I wanted to capture that quiet feeling with smooth brush strokes, gently blended together. The colors are a little less vibrant (by my standards anyway), but I managed to sneak in some warm rosy tones that the still-vibrant sky reflects onto the graying land. The color of the bare trees nearly blends into the land, collapsing the strict horizon line. The grasses glow golden with the evening light, but reflect a glowing white with morning frost. A Texas Winter is unique, with a blend of dormant and evergreen plant life, and colors that change with the season. My goal is always to capture the changing seasons of a single place, and to glean some understanding of the cycles of nature, and the cycles of life.

This collection includes ten paintings ranging in sizes from 6x6” to 12x12” created with oil paint on canvas. Each of the inspiration photos was taken at and around my family’s Farm in south Texas during the dormant, yet sublime season of Winter. I drew from a collection of photos taken from different vantage points around the property, from tight vignettes to sweeping views. The color palette is quieter, softer, and more smoothly blended to echo the quiet whisper of a Texas Winter landscape.

Lastly, I am so thrilled to bring this collection to you exclusively through a new gallery: Liza Pruitt!
